<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I watched the Oscars last night with my sister, Anna. We watch it every year together. With a mom who studied theater arts in college, my whole family has been watching the Oscars since I can remember. We would have parties growing up with close family friends, starting to watch the red carpets at 3 pm- before TiVo days- to hear every star's interview. It was like the Superbowl for us.

My chambray blouse was put on hold completely to do homework and list every item in my apartment on KSL for sale. Every piece of furniture except for my bed and all of our office/sewing room stuff is being sold for when we move downtown next month. The new apartment is only 1 bedroom, so we are going to do a living/sewing room/office/dining room combo! It will be a party. Goodbye chair and table :(
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Next month I'll be heading to Cali again to make my little sister Olivia's prom dress. Last year's dress was a total hit, so this one has to be good. I was able to do double duty and draw some options for Liv as well as my Fashion Illustration class. Which one do you like the best, Liver?
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">In my mind's eye on Monday night I saw a chambray (leftover fabric from my Valentine's dress) button-down blouse with a tie collar and a sequin tank top to wear over it, either in pink or gold. I guess what triggered this creative thought were all the sequin tank tops under blazers that girls wear in Pinterest Pins. I guess I felt left out.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I started on the pattern the other night. I based the pattern for this blouse on the bodice pattern from this dress (also my valentine dress), mostly because it fits so well over my bust.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">To adopt the pattern, I started by tracing the pattern pieces, and extended the side seams, center front, princess seams, and center back so that the pattern extends past my natural waist like a normal blouse, which would look best hitting just above my hips.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">**You may be wondering why I have a full center front piece for this pattern, and not just a half pattern piece that is placed on a fold when cut out.. it's because my body is asymmetrical, so my right side is different from my left. For this blouse I have all different pattern pieces for both sides**

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I made the hem at center front longer than at the princess seams because I want them hem to be like a traditional button up blouse, with the front and back longer than the sides.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I then traced my side pieces and extended the princess seams and side seams to correspond to the center front piece. I did the same thing for my back and side back pieces as well.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I then used my Vary Form Curve (or can be called a French Curve in some settings) to blend the hem from the side front pieces to the center front piece, to make a nice curved hem.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I did this whole process, with the same measurements, for my back pieces as well.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Once the patterns were all adjusted, I cut them out. Please note that I NEVER add seam allowances to my paper patterns anymore. I've learned from my classes at SLCC Fashion Institute that it is best to add seam allowances only when the pattern is cut. This makes the whole process of altering patterns during fittings much, much easier. Obviously, this only works when making patterns for individuals. In the industry when computer patterns are made and are cut by another person for production, seam allowances are added to those patterns for accuracy.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">When cutting out, I have to true my darts to make sure that the seam lines are accurate when sewing. To do this, I folded the pattern at the dart point.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The next step is to make sure that all the seam lines match up (this necessary process proves why not having seam allowances is so nice when making patterns). I did this on the front pieces by carefully guiding the side front panel's seamline (the cut edge of the pattern) down the center front panel's seamline. this is tricky to do when my seam lines are so curved, which is why it has to be done carefully, and probably a few times. I also had to make sure my darts were folded as they are sewn since they take out excess in the seam line.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">On some of my pieces, the seam lines didn't match up. I made a decision to either shorten the one piece or lengthen the other- I usually just lengthen the other for the 1st muslin fitting in order to err on the side of too much, rather than too little.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">My patterns are trued. Too cut out, the guide I always follow for muslin mock ups is to have no seam allowance added on the necklines or hems of any garments, so that during the fitting I can easily see where these lines are without having to subtract extra fabric visually. I leave 1" at the opening (which is down my center front), and a 1/2" everywhere else. Sometimes I'll do an 1" on my side seams, but since I have used a form of this pattern before, I don't find it necessary.

The charity co-chairs had 3 of the designers display their looks on Channel 2 morning news, and I was one of them, with Carrie Pennington and Kim Dunn, both FI students.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Steve took a break from watching the Twilight Zone this morning to finally take some pictures of my new wool peplum jacket. I love this jacket. I love that the fullness in the peplum is just right. I love the perfectly eased-in tight sleeves-- they are a little too tight to wear with regular sweaters, but I would rather have that then have a nice jacket with big ol' sleeves. The pleating on the sleeve shoulders did not work out at all- soo unflattering. Steve said they made me look like I was a woman playing a man in a Shakespearean play, like Viola in Twelfth Night... I imagine my hair cut didn't help that image.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I had a little Amazon book therapy this morning too. I'm dying to make a leather jacket. dying. I have never sewn with leather before and there are no leather classes at SLCC Fashion Institute. As Fashion Club President, I am trying to set up a workshop on leather for the students. It is a communal need to sew with leather, beyond just making bags or accessories, but actual garments.

I should get the book on Wednesday, and then after a little studying I'll buy the leather at Tandy Leather- I'm imagining a soft, sandy tan leather with a navy blue wool collar and welt pockets, and flared peplum. <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">This weekend of rest will be good for my back. After about 13 hours straight free-motion sewing lace to chambray, I have to roll my back on a golf ball to get the knots out from under my right shoulder blade. Sewing isn't great on the body.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">After lunch we decided to not go to a typical movie but instead go to the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. I had never been there before and had been meaning to go forever. It was so great: full of really cool art by local Salt Lake artists and other American artists. There were many pieces that had to do with technology and how we display ourselves on the internet; how we use our personalities as commodities in order to achieve notoriety/fame/success. We are built of many personalities, but only one is shown on Facebook and the internet-- "I am a diamond with many facets" as one artist described it in a video piece.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">There was another exhibit from local artist Siren Bliss who has created more than 80,000 pieces of art so far in his life. He had many very interesting thoughts about creativity and being an artist as a career, and I was able to scribble down a few:

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">"Find out who you are. Find out where this is. Find out what this is. Find out who you are. Find out what to do about it. Find out who the others are. Create or do not create in accordance with your findings."

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">"He who takes possession loses [...] I decided that to be economical with my career [as an artist], I would stay away from taking possession as mush as possible and either dump [my art] for quick cash or give it to the charities to do with what they may."

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> "I sacrifice a lot for what I get. If you don't eat anything except bowls of oatmeal, unseasoned, anything at all will taste like a huge garden of flowers."

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I feed off of other creative people. I'm grateful that down town has so many creative outlets. I learned how to do free-motion sewing at my last job, where we would have to take off yards of lace trim on a tulle gown, and then re-sew it on after the hem was altered. Of course hand stitching all that lace back on the hem would have taken forever. One of the nice ladies at my work who had sewn her whole life taught me how to sew free-motion.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Free-motion sewing basically means appliqueing lace or other materials (but mostly done with lace) with your sewing machine without using a foot. You read that right... free-motion sewing is done without any foot on the machine! It is just the needle and your hands keep everything flat that sews the lace to the fabric. If the foot were used, there would be a lot of shifting going on to the fabric that is being appliqued, which would result in a poor-looking garment for sure. Free-motion sewing is a proper method for appliqueing lace onto other fabrics that is long lasting and looks really good.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Steve bought me this black lace for Valentine's. I had my eye on it at Tissu since I 1st saw it there two weeks ago. It is a non-beaded corded black lace that has a beautiful
floral and leaf motif. It goes perfectly with the chambray dress I made
up last week, which is the same pattern as this dress. I love this pattern so much-- oober flattering tres chic in cotton chambray fo sho.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I wanted to just add the lace to the back of the dress, much like my jacket I made last year with the lace detail. The easiest way to drape lace is to use a dress form. Having your daughter/friend/mom/other loved one stand there while you accidentally poke pins in them for 45 minutes per side would not be fun. But draping like this doesn't work on a hanger either-- you need to be able to mimic the curves of the body to make sure the lace is placed correctly. A dress form like Sophie is vital
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Note: I draped the lace on each side of the dress in one piece-- lace is malleable and stretchy enough to drape around a body without having to add darts-- especially on the back.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The first thing I did was place the dress on the dress form, zipped up. I am larger than my dress form, but that doesn't matter for draping and placing lace on a dress-- if need be, you can always pin the dress excess out of the way if you feel you need a tighter fit. I did this each time I draped the back sides.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I then draped the scalloped edge of my lace down the center back, overlapping the zipper slightly, and pinned it in place. Make sure you leave enough length at the top to ensure that you have enough lace to go up to the shoulder seam.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Once the Center Back is pinned in place, I then smooth the lace over the shoulder, pinning that in place while also cutting away what I need to in order for the lace to wrap around the neck.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Then, I moved down the armscye, smoothing out the lace and making sure that the lace going across the back is smooth, but not too tight that is pulling.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">At this point, there was too much extra lace to work with, since I was still working with the entire yard and a half Steve bought me. This is the time to cut off the rest of the lace that is not needed, however, I made sure that I had enough lace past the dress's side seam to make sure I wouldn't be short-- I probably left 5" past the dress's side seam just to be sure. I also cut off the extra lace past the waist seam of the dress, but left about 3" past to also be super dooper sure.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Then I pinned the lace down the side seam of the dress. I shifted the lace piece a lot a this point, but never unpinned the lace scallop down the Center Back-- that has to stay in place no matter what. The point is to make sure that all the lace is smooth over the garment.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">It took a lot of shifting to make sure the lace was smooth. I had to readjust the armscye and the shoulder seam pinning. That's just how it is- readjusting until it's perfect. After that, I pinned the lace across the back like crazy to ensure no movement once the lace is sewn. I trimmed off any excess lace, but left about a 1" allowance around the entire piece to, once again, ensure coverage JUST IN CASE.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Now for the fun part. Time to sew. I took the dress off the dress form very carefully and set up my machine for free-motion: removed the foot, is all, really. For my machine and the fabric being used, I didn't need to adjust anything-- not the tension or the stitch length. On other machines and other fabrics, these two elements will have to be changed sometimes. How will you know? By testing different setting on scraps of fabric. That's the best way to make the best decision for your garment.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I even made a handy dandy tutorial video for ya'll. It's just showing what it looks like really, and how using both hands to keep the fabric nice and flat is essential. As are the pins.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">You may have to stop and pick out some of the stitching because bubbles in the chambray start to form, which is not good. The lace must be pinned securly in place and the held while sewing with both hands to help the bubbling. Once the sewing is done (seriously, like 4 hours later) there will be some slight bubbling since only the motif part of the lace is sewn down and not the tulle. Give the lace a good press with lots of steam and that slight bubbling will go away. This is what it looks like all done:

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I have the scallops on both sides of the back meeting at Center Back, hiding the zipper. But all the raw edges of the lace aren't looking to pretty. So what I did was cut out individual motifs from the lace and place them over the raw edges to create a nice pattern on the waist, side seams, and shoulder seams. I did the entire process again, with pinning like crazy, free sewing, and pressing really well.

I bought this baby online a few days ago after I had used the exact one at school a few times and just fell in love... The steam is so consistent and the iron isn't too heavy. It just glides. The very handsome Fedex man rang my doorbell an hour ago. Isn't he (the iron) beautiful???
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I love how professional and industrial looking it is... since it is industrial and professional! it's really light, too, like it doesn't need all that pomp and flash at all, it's just a great iron.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I am taking an InDesign software class at SLCC right now, and it is becoming one of my favorites for the semester. It is so fun building graphics on the computer, especially the fancy-schmancy giant macs the school has. I can't brag about SLCC enough and their arts programs-- they really foster learning in students and provide everything they can to make students better, and this is coming from a BYU alum.

I wanted to start writing again primarily because I feel like it is important to my career and to chronicle my projects. I was just looking at my gallery of projects in the link above, and noticed how outdated it is-- not just with the pictures, but with my sewing techniques. I have come a long way from when I first started sewing in 2008, that is for sure. I have learned to take my time with projects, to take a step back for a day or so and return to it. My garments always end up better when I take a few hours off and come back to it (which isn't so good if I ever want to do project runway...).
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">This silk crepe a-line dress was made during my hiatus. I made it for myself for Christmas in my Bridal/Evening wear class, which is more of a couture technique class than anything, since we don't have to do bridal or even boning for our projects. We just have to make something really good, which is what I did with this dress. The neckline is a little too wide for my comfort, which I will have to change in my pattern when I make the next dress from it (I love it that much). I'm just mad I didn't realize that my necklace is hidden when Steve took these pictures of me before church yesterday. Just imagine this necklace with my dress-- it looks really good, I promise.
It is really hard. I have had to teach Steve how to pin me up, the right way to pin, and how to identify wrinkles in garments that shouldn't be there. He now comments on anything I wear that doesn't fit right... his knowledge now is downright annoying and I've created a monster.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">With my dress form, however, I am able to add certain details to my garments wihtout having to wear it. I still have to fit myself a lot and Steve still has to pin me up all the time, but now I can add pleats or gathers, trims, place buttons, fix hems on my clothes using the form.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Last night I worked on my peplum jacket. I wanted volume in the sleeve but not just with boring gathers. So I basted in the sleeve mock up into the armscye, tried it on, tried to pin some cool pleats in the sleeve while looking in a mirror. I then remembered I had a dress form, and could to this a lot easier.
I can't tell you how awesome it feels going to bed at midnight (the clock just hit 12 as I typed that) with tired hands and a sewing room floor covered in fabric scraps.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">This morning I had jewelry class again-- we meet twice a week and it is becoming one of my favorites so far. Last time I had made a copper ring not knowing why we had to make that 1st before using other metals... but after working with nickel and sterling silver, copper is like working with paper. It is almost TOO malleable. My second ring was made from nickel, which isn't too pretty at all, but much nicer with which to work. But the piece de resistance was the sterling silver-- hard, but not too hard, shiny, and oh so fun. I decided to add a hammered detail to the ring once it was all done. Some flicker is always nice.. I hope this picture shows it well enough:

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I am also taking tailoring this semester, which I had done at BYU many moons ago. Refreshed courses are always nice. So after jewelry class today I headed home and started on making the pattern, sewing the muslin, and pad-stitching the shoulder pads for tomorrow's class where we will be doing our first fitting.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">It's not unlike me to work on two or three projects at once. This past week instead of working on homework I've been sewing a peplum jacket with some wool that I have had forever. I hope to finish it this weekend! Pics to come, of course. Here is the adorable lining and facing I made up last night.. coral grosgrain and all...
I have always loved jewelry, and I can make some good stuff, but I wanted to get into metal working. That desire has been realized. Below is a pic of me soldering a bronze ring (wearing a J.Crew jacket, mind you):
It's been awhile for me writing in the ol' blog. 5? 6 months? geez louise.

A lot has happened since the last time I was here. I finished my 1st semester at SLCC Fashion Institute, finished my evening gown (see below), took a summer class in Fashion Illustration (got an A and was told that I would succeed in the design world by my teacher... so I'm kind of a big deal...), got elected Fashion Club President at my school without even running (a different teacher asked me to do it, in case you were doubting my legit-ness), did 2 fashion shows (pics to come), made 3 tops that are great, and made a wedding dress for a client.

Why didn't I blog all this? I guess because I was burnt out. Like, put-some-salt-water-on-that-beachside-bonfire-burnt out. Yes, I am really busy, but I am still sewing a lot for myself. And hopefully in the next month I'll have pics of everything I did while I was away.

Am I back to blogging regularly? Yes. Will I be posting tutorials and step by step stuff like I have in the past? Prob not. BUT I will be blogging all of our Fashion Club activities, so that all you Salt Lake peeps can come see in person and look at my work! It'l be great!

So here is the long awaited evening gown I made my first semester at SLCC Fashion Institute. It is REALLY TIGHT. I had to do a hook and eye closure on the back instead of a zipper because a zipper would never work-- it is that tight. But, I look amazing in it and all that boning has been used wisely. I love this dress. Hopefully I'll find a place to where it someday (seeing that my waistline doesn't suddenly explode... eesh). My favorite part? The lace trim on the hem. yeah, that's all handstitched...

Oh, and I cut off all my hair. It's the new me! Hello red lipstick!
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; font-size: large;">I learned a lot making my evening gown this semester about fit and draping, but a few of the things I learned were so simple, yet so monumental and necessary for my future work. I've been sewing french seams since I learned to sew 4 years ago, but it never really clicked for me how to make them absolutely perfect, and sewing them in silk chiffon is a whole other adventure.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
For the skirt of my gown, the seams are obviously very long, and when sewing such long seams in silk chiffon, it is very easy sew in ease, which makes the seams bubbly and not cute. Eugene had some very cool techniques for sewing french seams.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
To start with, the two pieces that were ready to be sewn were first pinned to the wall and then pinned together so that with the help of gravity, no ease was pinned into the seam.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
Now, for one of the BEST THINGS I learned this semester at SLCC from Eugene:

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
To sew such lightweight and slippery fabrics like silk chiffon, it is hard to keep the fabrics pinned together like they should be, with matched up raw edges, especially when you are only sewing a 1/4" seam for french seams.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
To conquer that frustration, lower the machine foot and tape a pack of sewing machine needles right next to that foot (don't tape it to the foot, just to the machine). This pack of needles creates a perfect guide for not only your seamline, but it keeps the chiffon from slipping by pushing it towards the needle. It is amazing how well this trick works-- honestly, one of the coolest things I've ever learned.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
AND if you don't want a 1/4" seam, you can either move your needle to the desired width, or tape the pack of needles farther from the foot.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
Eugene then had me trim the 1/4" seam allowances to about 1/8", and then I pressed the seam open, which can be hard to do, but when the fabric has to be flipped so that wrong sides are together and the new seam has to be sewn, it is ten billion times easier to have the 1st seam pressed open.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
The next trick I learned was how to sew rolled hems. Oh rolled hems, how you have tormented me in the past. Can I get a wha-WHA from everyone who has tried to force yourself to faint trying to sew a damn rolled hem?! I even went out and bought a rolled hem foot for my Bernina and that only really works if I sew on the straight grain, which is like 10% of my sewing. And what hem is on the straight grain??? Answer: none... i think.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
The way that Eugene taught us, however, is genius. Sew a folded edge of 1/8" the entire hem using a blind hem foot. The bar on the blind hem foot acts a lot like the taped pack of sewing needles: a buffer that pushes the fabric onto itself. The blind hem foot also keeps the fabric folded with very little effort on my part, which is refreshing :)

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
Now, the silk charmeuse was very slippery and hard to sew, and my first fold of my rolled hem was a little wide, so I did have to go around the hem and VERY CAREFULLY trim some of that fold excess away. For beginners, it may be easier to just fold over like an 1/2" or 1" and then trim down to the very stitches.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
Then, I just went around the hem again the same way I had done the first
time, folding over the edge and sewing it using my blind hem foot. Yes,
this technique does take A TON of thread, especially for a hem on an
A-line evening gown, but is so much easier and takes less time than
using a stupid rolled hem foot.

Today was my last day of school for the semester. I'm kinda sad. I love school. I love being graded and being the best in my class... that is a sincere attitude of mine, and I'm not ashamed of it. I honestly thrive on getting straight A's. Is that weird?

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
The bodice draping on my evening gown was a labor of love. I had to drape it twice to get what I wanted, but once I got the hang of it, it was a sea breeze.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
The first time I draped it on my own, outside of class, the draping was just too heavy and controlled. It looked like it was homemade and amateurish.I got to class that week and I was ready to give up on this dress and move on to a different project. I had looked through my Pinterest Inspire board trying to feel better about my gown design, and realized I had NO draped dresses AT ALL. I was shocked. It was like I had subconsciously ignored draped dresses, and for some reason I had thought to do it all of a sudden.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
Of course, I was being a drama queen. Eugene, my teacher for evening wear, talked me off the ledge of giving up and encouraged me to just re-drape with his help, and re-commit to the dress that he knew would be great. So I took another shot. Eugene said that my draping was "too perfect", and I needed to make it a bit more messy and less controlled. The second time around was ten times easier than trying to make perfect drapes like I had, and it took half the time.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
I draped one side of the bodice at a time, using two different mannequins so that my draping would still be continuous.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
Once everything was pinned, I pinned each fold like crazy so I could take the bodice pieces off the mannequin to hand baste the chiffon draping to the bodice. It was actually a really fun process. Once everything was basted, I sewed the bodice back together, and it looks like this:

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

Oh, the silk.<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
Finishing up finals this week. Must. blog. faster!!!

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
After the muslin was done, I used the canvas bodice, withe the boning and everything, as the under-structure of my real gown. I threw away the muslin skirt after I had transferred all my alterations to my flat pattern. I took apart the canvas bodice, and began cutting out the silk for the bodice which would lay over the under-structure. I had basted all the soft, slippery silk pieces to the canvas-- even the best seamstress probably couldn't use a sewing machine to do this. By hand is the best and most accurate way to add layers to bodices.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I love hand sewing. I love that I can just sit on the couch and watch a movie while I do it.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">After everything was hand basted, I sewed up the bodice again, treating the silk and the canvas as one. Doing a good hand basting job means that sewing everything back together is a sinch.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I bought the silk from Yellow Bird. It was quite pricey, but my evening gown teacher said it was one of the best silk charmeuse fabrics he had ever seen. I guess I could have used something a little cheaper, since black silk chiffon covers it all up. But, the important thing is that I know it's there, and I know how much work I put into the dress, how much money, and time. And when I wear it, that gold silk charmeuse is going to be worth everything.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">This is what high quality fabric does to a person.
Not cool, I say. not cool. Sorry I was MIA. This week threw me for a loop.
Anyway, the muslin. I think about 75% of the length of my Bridal and Evening Wear class at SLCC was about getting the fit right. I tried on my damn muslin dress every week, and every week the dress did get better and better, but it was really annoying to see that bland muslin color for so long. I was happy too finally cut out my silks. But as my teacher, Eugene said, the fit is EVERYTHING. And that muslin serves its purpose. There is no reason to not get the perfect fit at this stage, no matter how long it takes, because if the fit is off when you cut out your silks, then, well, you're in the pooper.

I cut out three different bodices in the canvas with new boning every time. Always pre-shrink canvas when you sew with it, because all the steam that is used can do a number on the duck cloth. I made this mistake, and then had to remake my whole bodice again with pre-shrunk duck cloth. It was very annoying.

I believe all this images have been on the blog before, but let's just reiterate this process again, since it is so important, shall we?

............ And i just looked through my phone and I think I accidentally deleted all my photos that I took of my muslin in class. GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So i only have the pics that were on the blog before.

Don't worry, the next posts will be better.
I posted the muslin I had made for my evening wear class at Salt Lake Community College a few months ago when I was just starting, but let me tell you I never thought that gown would end up where it is today. This project has been the most challenging and rewarding to date. I love how my gown turned out, and I can't wait for you to see it!

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
I had scribbled down a gown about a year ago that I thought would be a great bridal gown for my little sister some day, and for some reason when I started my first week of classes at SLCC, this gown was stuck in my head. Originally I was thinking it would be a black silk chiffon over some sort of gold charmeuse, with black beaded lace on the hem, neckline, sleeve hem, and lace.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
I bought this lace trim from Mood when I was in New York City over new year's. It spoke to me, and I knew I needed to find some way to use it on my dress. The roses measured about 2" in diameter. I loved how it wasn't beaded and very casual looking- it would be great to to mix with a more fancy, beaded lace.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
My evening wear class, which is now completed, was a very free environment. My teacher, Eugene (who is a sewing genius with crazy experience), really let us do anything we wanted. We didn't need to have boning, or a full length gown, nada. We could do whatever we wanted. As I had never done boning before, I knew I wanted to try it with this gown. I think I may take the class again in a couple semesters and do something without boning, like a simple church dress, to see what other techniques I could learn from Eugene. He really is great, and I highly recommend any seamstress or seamster to take his class.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
So i had the idea, and the lace, and the sketch. But to be honest, the development of the gown is on-going. The gown that hangs in my closet now is much different than the sketch-- editing is a very important and full-o-learning process. Eugene helped out a lot of this. Like a regular Tim Gunn!

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The next part was the muslin, which I've blogged about a little bit already. I'll re-hash that tomorrow though. Don't want anybody missing anything!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15197007109855495034noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7865941540888671176.post-52124698193800904292012-04-20T21:32:00.004-07:002012-04-20T21:32:53.286-07:00My beautiful sister...The belle of the ball.<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; text-align: center;">
Olivia's prom was last weekend. She was the belle of the ball, thanks to me and my mom (who filled in all the sequins that had to be removed to sew the seams after the dress was done! it took her for days!) I'm pretty proud of the gown and how it turned out, and my beautiful sister.
